Gulden Draak Classic Barrel 5 litres

Gulden Draak Classic is a Triple Dark Strong Dark Ale brewed with the highest quality raw materials including noble hops and the unique wine yeast Josef Van Steenberge brought back from Bordeaux in 1986. The result is a dark-coloured Belgian craft beer with an aroma and taste of roasted malt, caramel and coffee.

Its profile evolves over time if it is left to rest, acquiring multiple nuances and complexity. Its name comes from the historic Golden Dragon that crowns Ghent's bell tower and symbolises the power and freedom of the city.

Brouwerij Van Steenberge

The history of the Gulden Draak range of beers began in 1784, when Jean Baptiste De Bruin founded a brewery in the village of Ertvelde (Belgium) called De Peer. When he died, his wife Angelina Petronella Schelfaut took over the brewery. A few years later, his nephew Josef Schelfaut, a great connoisseur of the art of brewing, took over the brewery.

Subsequently, Josef's daughter, Margriet Schelfaut, married Paul Van Steenberge. Van Steenberge, a professor of microbiology, took over the brewery after the First World War. Josef Van Steenberge, who took over the company in 1962, started brewing special top-fermented beers and in 1978 acquired the recipes for the St Augustijn abbey beers. The beers in the range St Augustijn were launched on the market a few years later together with the beer Piraat and Guldren Draak.
