Pauwel Kwak
Kwak is an Amber Ale style beer, famous for its "Koetsiersglas" glass holder. It is brewed by combining three types of malt and is amber in colour with a dense, creamy head. It has a light, sweet aroma of malt, liquorice and caramel and on the palate it has notes of caramel and honey with a hint of citrus. Alcohol content: 8 proof.
Brouwerij Bosteels
It has been brewed by Brouwerij Bosteels since 1980 in Buggenhout, Belgium, where the famous Tripel Karmeliet is also produced. This beer and its iconic glass with wooden stand are inspired by the story of the brewer Pauwel Kwak who, in addition to brewing his own beer, owned a tavern called De Hoorn in Dendermonde, halfway between Ghent and Michelen.
This tavern was a regular stop for the mail horse-drawn carriages. Due to a Napoleonic law, the drivers were not allowed to leave the carriage to rest at the inn, so they could not drink. Kwak devised a bracket to attach to the carriage where beer could be hitched. In this way drivers could drink without getting out of the carriage.
